C. System 2 - Handicap + Resilience Lives

System 2 - Handicap + Resilience Lives

Combining the JJ1 Modified scoring and submission rules along with System 1's handicap calculator, this is where things get really fun.

This format is designed for:

Mixed-sex competition

Open-weight competition

Superfights

Extreme mismatch challenges

Core Principle

Points compensate for positional disadvantages.

Resilience Lives compensate for submission disparity.

These are tracked separately.

A disadvantaged player down on points cannot bait a submission to get a reset.

Any player called out for baiting will lose 1 life and there will not be a point reset.

After Sub life, points reset to 0-0 + handicap. Last life score resets 0-0 NO HANDICAP

Match Victory

Win by:

Submission

Points

Overtime

IMPORTANT

Submissions do NOT score points.

Submissions only remove lives.

Handicap Points

System 2 uses the same handicap scale as System 1 (belt + weight + age) plus a sex modifier.

Sex Modifier

Female competing against male +2 pts

Awarded to the female competitor.

× 2 Multiplier: When the gap in any factor reaches 2× the minimum threshold (2 belt ranks, 20 kg, or 20 years), that factor's points double. See System 1 for the full handicap table.

Resilience Lives

Lives are awarded to the competitor with the highest handicap total — the most disadvantaged athlete.

Lives = floor(handicap points ÷ 2), maximum 5

2–3 pts = 1 life

4–5 pts = 2 lives

6–7 pts = 3 lives

8–9 pts = 4 lives

10+ pts = 5 lives

Because System 2 compounds belt, weight, age, and sex disadvantages, heavily mismatched athletes will typically reach the 5-life cap.

Maximum Lives

5 Resilience Lives

Life Loss Example

Athlete starts with:

3 Lives

1st Submission = 2 Lives Remaining

2nd Submission = 1 Life Remaining

3rd Submission = 0 Lives Remaining

4th Submission = Match Loss

Submission Reset

After each submission:

Score resets to 0–0 + handicap

One life removed

Athletes restart standing

This creates a new "round."

Example

Male Black Belt 100 kg (220 lbs)

vs

Female Blue Belt 57 kg (125 lbs)

Female Blue Belt handicap:

+16 Belt (4-rank gap — ×2 multiplier)

+12 Weight (43 kg gap)

+2 Sex (female vs male)

Total handicap: 30 pts

Resilience Lives: floor(30 ÷ 2) = 15 → capped at 5 Lives

The Black Belt must secure:

6 submissions to win or more points
