B. System 1 - Handicap
26 May 2026

The idea of a handicap came a few weeks ago when I was chatting with my students about an in-house tournament. Everyone was keen but felt like there wouldn't be enough people who are equal in size/age to compete against, so I suggested a handicap.
This is what I came up with to be used in conjunction with the JJ1 Modified Scoring system
SYSTEM 1
Universal Handicap Division
Points Handicap Only
This is the most traditional version of the format.
Best suited for:
Open-weight tournaments
Academy competitions
Mixed age divisions
Team events
Core Rules
Standard IBJJF scoring
Jiu Jitsu 1st Modifications:
-
0.5 pt takedown attempt (e.g. deep single leg that fails 0.5, or any part of opponents torso that touches the mat but they get back up is 0.5pt)
-
Negative points for pulling guard (-4 points)
-
Stalling: 1st call = verbal warning (no points deducted). Each subsequent call = -2 points. Stalling is defined as any position not advanced for 5 continuous seconds. Active submission attempts are exempt.
-
Submission wins instantly
-
modified IBJJF submission rules (e.g. white belt can toe hold brown and black belts, brown and black belts cannot toe hold white belts)
-
modified No-gi Only, IBJJF submission rules (e.g. lower belts can heel hook brown and black belts, brown and black belts cannot heel hook lower belts)
-
No advantages
-
Optional sudden death overtime if tied (1st to score wins)
-
Handicap points awarded before match begins
Belt Handicap
Same Belt 0
1 Belt +2
2 Belts +8
3 Belts +12
4 Belts (White vs Black) +16
Awarded to:
Lower belt athlete
Age Handicap
0–9 Years 0
10–19 Years +2
20–29 Years +8
30+ Years +12
Awarded to:
Older athlete
Weight Handicap
<10 kg (22 lbs) +0
10–19.9 kg (23–42 lbs) +2
20–29.9 kg (44–66 lbs) +8
30–39.9 kg (67–88 lbs) +12
40+ kg (89+ lbs) +16
Awarded to:
Lighter athlete
× 2 Multiplier Rule
When the gap in any single factor reaches double the minimum scoring threshold — 2 belt ranks, 20 kg, or 20 years — that factor's points double. Factors are calculated independently, so a large belt gap and a small weight gap are calculated separately.
Why: A disadvantage twice the minimum threshold is proportionally twice as hard to overcome, so it earns twice the compensation.
Handicap Formula
Starting Score =
Belt Handicap + Age Handicap + Weight Handicap
Example
Brown Belt 25 years old 86 kg (190 lbs)
vs
Purple Belt 45 years old 73 kg (160 lbs)
Purple receives:
+2 Belt (1 rank gap)
+8 Age (20-year gap — ×2 multiplier kicks in)
+2 Weight (13 kg gap)
Starting Score:
12–0
